Simplified Vs Traditional Chinese: Which Should You Learn?

Written Chinese has two main writing systems known as Simplified and Traditional characters.

Choosing which one to learn is one of the first major decisions you’ll make when starting your Mandarin journey.

The choice ultimately depends on where you plan to live, work, or travel.

I’ll break down the differences between these two systems so you can make an informed decision.

What’s the difference?

Traditional Chinese is the original writing system that’s been used for thousands of years.

It features complex characters with many intricate strokes.

Simplified Chinese is a much newer system created by the government in Mainland China during the 1950s.

The goal of this new system was to increase literacy rates among the general population.

To achieve this, language experts reduced the number of strokes in thousands of complex characters.

They merged some characters together and completely redesigned others to make them easier to write.

Despite these visual changes, the spoken language remains exactly the same.

A word is pronounced the exact same way whether you read it in its Simplified or Traditional form.

Where are they used?

Geography is the most important factor when choosing between the two systems.

Mainland China officially uses Simplified Chinese for all public writing, media, and education.

Singapore and Malaysia also adopted the Simplified Chinese system decades ago.

Traditional Chinese remained the official writing system in places that weren’t under the control of Mainland China during the 1950s reforms.

Taiwan uses Traditional characters exclusively for all daily communication.

Hong Kong and Macau also use Traditional characters for all written media.

Many older overseas Chinese communities (like historic Chinatowns in the US and Europe) still heavily rely on Traditional characters.

However, newer immigrant communities around the world increasingly use Simplified characters.

Visual comparisons and examples

Let’s look at a few common words to see how the two systems compare visually.

Some characters look entirely different, while others only have minor changes.

In many cases, the characters remain exactly the same in both systems.

How to choose between the two

You should base your decision entirely on your personal goals and travel plans.

Choose Simplified Chinese if you plan to do business, travel, or live in Mainland China.

Simplified is also the absolute best choice if you’re moving to Singapore.

Most modern language apps, textbooks, and university courses outside of Asia default to teaching Simplified Chinese.

Choose Traditional Chinese if you plan to live or study in Taiwan or Hong Kong.

Traditional characters are also highly recommended for those interested in ancient Chinese history, literature, or calligraphy.

It’s much easier to read historical texts if you understand the traditional stroke patterns.

If you’re completely unsure of your future plans, I recommend starting with Simplified Chinese.

It’s generally easier for beginners to memorize because there are fewer strokes to write.

Once you master one system, learning to read the other is actually quite easy.
